Saloon

The Buffalo Saloon has been around almost as long as Deadwood has been a town. Built in 1877 by Mike Russell and his brother James, but James had other interest and soon sold his half back to his brother who then took on partner Jeremy W. Higbig.  In 1879, the Buffalo Bar burned down along with most of Deadwood and Mike then found himself running the Buffalo Bar that was rebuilt by himself for almost 20 years. When Jeremy W. Higbig died, his family sold his interest back to Mike who became the sole owner of the Buffalo Bar.

In the 1960's, the famous rope Buffalo's that hang over head in the Buffalo Saloon were commissioned.  Over 3 1/4 miles of rope was used to make these famous rope Buffalo. "It is a sight to stare at", one tourist from Canada said recently. Three Buffalo nickel portraits (all made from Buffalo nickels) also hang on the wall in the Buffalo Saloon and Buffalo Steakhouse. 6900 nickels it took to make the buffalo's.
